It would be easy to confuse the name Life Skills Coaching with Life Coaching but they are distinctly different. Life Coaching is a general description to those dedicated to assisting others in becoming fully conscious in whatever they do. Life Coaches are committed to assisting those seeking direction and to finding the answers within themselves. Coaches also empower others to create prosperity, joy and fulfillment in their lives as a whole.
Although Life Skills Coaches can work in different settings, they are distinct in their intent and goal. Some Life Skills coaches speak to high school students on subjects such as staying in school. They also might use motivational methods to work with students on going to college, or to help teenagers with transitioning into adulthood due to poor education, as well as physical and/or mental disabilities. A Life Skills coach might also be someone who is assisting an elderly person to do their daily tasks.
Becoming a Life Skills Coach requires special training not only formal but hands-on as well. In order to be an example to others you would need to be confident in your ability and share those proficiencies with those who either depend on you or need to learn how to be competent on their own. Those coming from various backgrounds can use their education and experience to benefit those in need. Whether you are a nurse, have studied sociology, or have counseling experience, they are all assets in becoming a Life Skills Coach.
Depending on your aspirations for helping others as a Life Skills Coach, you may need additional education. If you would like to coach privately, technically there are no certifications required. As someone who assists the disabled or elderly with life skills in a facility, you may need a Master’s Degree in either social work or another related degree.
So what might be the rewards as a Life Skills Coach? This is a question only you can answer. If you are drawn to this type of profession there is something in you that probably likes to help others. You also are most likely a very patient person and have a great sense of humor which keeps everyone smiling. In the face of what your clients might be going through, this last asset is priceless.
Regardless of what your answer is about the reward for you, there is a great reward for those you are working with. If the person you are working with is in high school, they may see you as a role model and an example of possibility. The benefits a Life Skills Coaching client can experience could be as simple as peace of mind and comfort in knowing they have someone they can rely on and trust, even in helping them do the little things. Without realizing it, your clients may simply see you as a consistent figure in their life, a type of companion; after all we don’t live on this planet alone and as humans we do need each other.
