Legacy Coach - Shaping the Ultimate Perception of You

This entry was posted on Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

A legacy coach is most often linked with retirement or estate planning. Sometimes a legacy coach may advertise services to help overcome problems such as substance abuse.

But a legacy coach can be tapped to work with you to address a variety of other life challenges, including relationships, your ultimate reputation, image, and more.

Usually a person engages a legacy coach to try to take command of how they ultimately will be perceived by their family, friends, and the community. This could involve financial considerations, certainly, but there also can be more.

For example, a couple nearing retirement age may be concerned about the impact of their will on their adult children. It’s not necessarily divvying up the money that steered them to a legacy coach.

The couple may seek assistance on keeping the family together once the couple is gone. Often the legacy coach is not the only help sought; retirees may seek assistance from a legacy coach along with others such as financial advisers, or therapists.

Money does not always buy happiness, and sometimes assistance such that offered by a legacy coach is wise to seek, to avoid anticipated problems.

What to Expect with a Legacy Coach

A legacy coach will start with goals – what you want out of engaging him or her. Expect a series of questions:

  • How are your current relationships, with family or friends?
  • How do you want those who know you to remember you in 5 years, 10 years, and when you are gone?
  • What image or memories do you wish to leave?
  • Is there any impact you wish to leave on your community, such as more services for children, or a stronger health care system?

Once objectives are established, the legacy coach will work with you to explore conflicts and concerns, and to hopefully agree to a game plan of action steps needed to reach your goals.

Understand that much of this work is done cooperatively, with the legacy coach mostly listening, with your best interests in mind, and open to discussion about potential options.

The Legacy Coach and Identifying Problems and Solutions

Therein lays a big difference between the legacy coach and a consultant, therapist or psychologist. A coach is a partner with you toward achieving personal goals.

A legacy coach works with you to determine precisely what the problem is, or even whether or not you have a problem. Consultant, therapists, etc., are engaged believing right off the bat that you have a problem, and their job is to suggest a solution or solutions you are expected to follow.

Some may tap a legacy coach to try to fix a reputation that has been marred for whatever reason. Maybe the retiree was known to be hard on children, so the legacy coach makes the client realize that making a significant donation to a local children’s center may help in that realm.

A retiree may have an image, right or wrong, that he favored one of several of his children. Working with a legacy coach, the retiree can carefully arrange a plan to re-shape that perception.

Maybe it comes from a carefully written will, maybe the solution is elsewhere. But a legacy coach challenges you to admit past decisions, and to create an action plan to change your living legacy.
